How A Calcutta Girl Became A Comedy Creator: Kareema Barry

It’s 2020, the world’s gone crazy, and you’re stuck at home scrolling through endless TikToks and Instagram stories. Suddenly, you stumble upon a girl who’s somehow making the pandemic… funny? Meet Kareema Barry, the 26-year-old comedy queen who turned quarantine boredom into internet gold.

Born on October 24, 1997, in Kolkata, India, Kareema was just your average college grad with a wicked sense of humor. Little did she know that a simple Instagram challenge would catapult her into the spotlight faster than you can say “viral sensation.”

Characters We Love (and Love to Hate)

Kareema’s secret weapon? A cast of hilarious characters that hit way too close to home helped her shoot to fame:

  • Hot-Aunty-Sushmita: The OG that started it all. She’s extra, she’s fabulous, and she’s probably your mom’s best friend.
  • Rich Girl Samaira-h: Thinks doing dishes is a form of torture. We laugh, but we might also be a little bit Samaira-h (admit it).
  • The “Woke” Boys: You know them, you’ve dated them, you’ve rolled your eyes at them. Kareema’s take is chef’s kiss.

Recently she’s also been doing a lot of other random characters but a particularly popular one is “your boyfriend’s female bestie.” Watch here!

More Than Just Funny

But Kareema’s rise to fame isn’t just a story of lucky timing. Her background hints at a sharp mind behind the humor. Educated at Welland Gouldsmith School and The Heritage School in Kolkata, she went on to graduate from the prestigious Hindu College at the University of Delhi. Once aspiring to be a journalist, Kareema found an unexpected platform to make her voice heard. Through her razor-sharp satire, she tackles everything from mental health to women’s rights, all while making us snort-laugh.

From Your Phone to Your TV

While she’s now got 1.2M followers, Kareema’s talent couldn’t be contained to just Instagram. She’s taking over screens big and small:

  • Starred in Ashwin Adwani’s “Jugnoo” music video (2021)
  • Stole the show as Qayanaat in “Masaba Masaba” Season 2 on Netflix

Fun fact: She was only 22 when filming “Masaba Masaba.” Talk about goals!

Also, talk about girl gang goals! She’s besties with some of our other favourite influencers like Sakshi Shivdasani whom she often collaborates with.

Behind the characters and clever quips, Kareema’s got depth. She’s a champion debater (watch out, she’ll win arguments with humor AND logic). She’s passionate about mental health awareness and dedicated to amplifying women’s voices.

In a world of polished influencers and curated feeds, Kareema keeps it real. She’s not afraid to point out the absurd, challenge the status quo, or make us laugh at our own privilege. Her comedy does more than entertain – it makes us think, question, and maybe even grow a little.

So next time you’re mindlessly scrolling and a Kareema Barry video pops up, pay attention. You might just learn something between the laughs.

Yet another Bengali girl in Bengaluru, Anusuya is an experienced content specialist with 12+ years of experience. Currently the content manager at OneNative Studio, she thrives on being hands-on in the creative process; from writing compelling articles & blogs to crafting engaging social media posts & website copy. When not meeting deadlines, she enjoys Pinterest-planning her next trips; to explore new cities and immerse herself in local cultures, especially local food. Choosing a degree in Tourism was a no-brainer, while the writing came naturally with years of her nose being buried in books.
