Caffeine Chronicles: Navigating the Coffee Culture in India with Bean Connoisseurs
For many of us, a perfect cup of coffee is the secret ingredient to kickstart a Monday, set the mood for a romantic date, or simply enjoy good times with friends. In India, coffee has become more than just a beverage; it’s a way of life. The cafe culture, spearheaded by pioneers like Cafe Coffee Day (CCD), has transformed how Indians savor their coffee, making it a social activity.
According to Ashwini Om Sawant, founder of Kali Coffee Roasters and Training Center, and Mishthi Aggarwal, founder of 93 Degrees Coffee Roasters, the late 1990s saw the advent of the cafe culture in India. CCD played a pivotal role, offering a taste of the Western cafe experience and making coffee a social indulgence, especially among the youth.
Vikram Khurana, CEO of KAAPI Solutions, emphasizes how cafes are not just places to drink coffee anymore but have become hubs for creativity, conversation, and leisure, reflecting a blend of traditional tea-drinking customs and the international impact of coffee culture.
The South Indian Connection:
The roots of coffee in India trace back to the 17th century when Baba Budan smuggled seven coffee beans from Yemen and planted them in Karnataka. Coffee cultivation gained commercial significance by the 19th century, with the first Indian Coffee House established in Bombay in 1936.
South Indian filter coffee, or kaapi, is a beloved style known for its dark-roasted beans blended with chicory. The concoction is slowly filtered through a mesh, resulting in a well-balanced, aromatic cup with a special South Indian flavor.
Types of Coffee Beans:
In India, two main types of coffee beans are prominently used:
- Arabica: Known for its smoothness, pleasant acidity, and mild flavor profile with hints of sweetness, fruit, berries, and chocolate.
- Robusta: Bolder and stronger in taste, with a higher caffeine content. It has a robust, sometimes earthy or nutty flavor.
Cafe Favorites:
Coffee aficionados might be familiar with various types of coffee. Still, for those navigating through an extensive cafe menu, here’s a quick guide:
- Espresso: Strong and bold, the base for many other coffee drinks.
- Cappuccino: Creamy and balanced, with equal parts of espresso, steamed milk, and frothed milk.
- Latte: Smooth and milky, with a higher ratio of steamed milk to espresso.
- Americano: Milder than espresso, diluted with hot water, resembling drip coffee.
- Mocha: A mix of coffee and chocolate flavors, slightly sweet and rich.
Expert Recommendations:
Considering the Indian palate, cafe experts suggest:
- Cafe Latte: A comforting, creamy beverage with a well-balanced flavor.
- Flat White: For a sophisticated, less biting coffee with more coffee and less bitterness.
- Americano: A simple, unadulterated coffee flavor for those seeking neutrality.
- Mocha Cortado: A delightful blend of espresso, milk, and chocolate for a special and freshly brewed experience.
Brewing at Home:
If you’re keen on recreating cafe-style coffee at home, the experts have shared some tips:
- Espresso: Grind fresh coffee beans finely, pack them into an espresso machine’s portafilter, and extract them for a concentrated shot.
- Americano: Brew an espresso shot and dilute it with hot water to the desired strength.
- Cappuccino: Brew an espresso shot, heat and froth milk, and top the espresso with milk and foam.
- Mocha: Brew an espresso shot, mix it with chocolate ganache, and froth milk, and combine for a sweet and rich experience.
- Classic Cold Coffee: Blend espresso with ice, ice cream, and milk for a refreshing treat.
So, whether you’re a seasoned coffee connoisseur or just looking for a delightful cup, understanding the coffee lingo can make your cafe experience more enjoyable!
