Unstoppable: Who is Bhumika Beyond Darkness and Visual Challenge?
Can vision loss stop someone from achieving their dreams? Bhumika's determination and passion turned blindness into a stairway inspiring thousands.
Away from the ever-lit and crowded streets of Bengaluru, away from the noise of daily life, lives Bhumika on the outskirts of Bengaluru, whose story is nothing less than a plot for a movie. Now, carefully follow me into the dark world of Bhumika’s Kitchen
Bhumika Sudarshan is a 40-year-old woman from Someshwara Layout in Doddaballapur. She encountered life’s biggest challenge one could never imagine overcoming: she lost her vision at the age of 35 due to a rare eye condition called optic neuritis. This condition, which affects just one in five lakh people, causes inflammation in the eye, leading to pain and in severe cases, vision loss.
A beginning of a new life and new challenges, a journey with pain, strength and ultimately triumph? Let’s find out how she manages, survives, fights and overall, has to transform from one way of life to an entirely new one.
What happens when a sudden twist strikes in our life’s script?
Bhumika’s life before 2010 was that of a regular homemaker, but a woman with extraordinary dreams. Unfortunately, she developed an eye problem that progressively worsened and everything changed. By 2018, she was entirely blind and was pushed into a world of darkness.
Imagine, simple tasks like walking, reading and writing seemed like huge challenges, leaving her with pain and sorrow. She’s a woman who is always self-reliant and this was devastating.
Yet, overcoming the overwhelming darkness, a light shone bright guiding her to not stop cooking. Her love for cooking is much bigger than the challenges and despairs life throws at her. She decided not to be idle and to work in the kitchen. Once a monastery, her kitchen now seemed like a battlefield filled with challenges. Not that she had to, but she wanted to, yet friends and family were concerned for her safety and urged her to stay away. But did Bhumika give up easily?
What was once fun is now war!
Cooking has always been Bhumika’s creative outlet, her way of expressing love and feeding joy. She is known for her minimalist approach to recipes, creating dishes with a handful of ingredients, which is perfect for bachelors and those with busy and lazy lifestyles.
No matter how motivated and grit determined we are, without vision, the kitchen is a daunting space. Not every ingredient can be smelled, how about cutting vegetables? Even finding utensils becomes more than just a task.
Her husband Sudarshan supported and helped with tasks she couldn’t initially perform and those that were unsafe for her. He believed in her abilities when others worried for her and doubted her. Both Sudarshan and Bhumika reached out to visually impaired individuals who successfully overcame similar challenges. Through faith, adaptive techniques, determination and hard work, she began reclaiming her passion. Lots of meetings, continuous calls & meetings to learn to adapt tips and techniques, and hours of dedication turned into skills. She toddled herself through baby steps to start her life anew.
YouTube becomes primary for the unstoppable!
Every effort and lesson she learnt wasn’t just about preparing meals for her family, it was a way to prove to herself and the world that losing sight didn’t mean losing the essence of life. I say it’s a declaration that even in darkness, one can and must find light and purpose. It was time for Bhumika to launch her own YouTube channel. A platform where she could showcase her love for cooking and inspire us never to quit. Sudarshan became her biggest supporter and teammate. He took charge of shooting and editing her videos.
No matter how far they reached, the journey was never as smooth as it appears on screen or while reading like this. Bhumika relied on her sense of touch, often injuring herself beyond one’s imagination. Burns, cuts, and moments of frustration tested her willpower. But little life knew, each setback only strengthened her. Bhumika’s recipes are interesting and simple. Coconut rice and Puliyogare powder became a hit among bachelors and those looking for quick, delicious meals.
When a Family does more than a Family can do!
Bhumika’s journey wouldn’t have been this successful without her family’s support. Sumangala, her mother-in-law, and Rumale Nagaraj, her father-in-law, stood by her side just as parents, offering whatever was possible whenever she needed it.
Bhumika once held her daughter’s hands and taught her first steps. Today, those same hands help Bhumika navigate. Her 10-year-old daughter, Anushka, became her little helper in the kitchen always proud of her mother’s achievements and eager to share her cooking with friends.
Her husband is the reason her cooking is reached on YouTube. Sudarshan encouraged her to pursue her dream and contributed ideas, recipes, recording, editing, and marketing. Together, they created a channel that now has nearly 80,000 subscribers and continues to grow.
I think we can call this a legacy of a Visionary Chef!
Bhumika is the first blind woman in India to start a culinary YouTube channel. Her recipes are not just dishes, and her channel, Bhumika Kitchen, is her strength and serves as an inspiration to many of us who are facing our own battles.
As Bhumika shares, “My vision loss evolved to be my primary strength and a driving factor. It showed me that nothing is impossible.”
For those who’ve tasted her dishes virtually, heard her story, or just read for the first time, she proves that even in the darkest times, we can create something beautiful. After all, how can one value light without darkness?
