Jack Dorsey's Bluesky Opens Its Doors To All

Bluesky, the brainchild of Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, has finally opened its doors wide, inviting everyone to join its ranks. This social network is supposedly similar to Twitter but unique in its own way, with the tag line “Building a Social Internet”. Previously accessible only by invitation, this shift marks a significant milestone in Bluesky’s journey towards inclusivity and accessibility.

Bluesky Opens Doors: End of Invite-only Phase

Gone are the days of scouring the internet for elusive invites. Until now, hopeful users had to rely on connections within the Bluesky community to secure entry. This invite-only phase served a crucial purpose, allowing Bluesky to fortify its arsenal with robust moderation tools and essential features. As of this week, the invite-only period is over, and the site is accessible to all. The platform shared that they welcomed 1million+ users within a day of opening access on the 7th.

Bluesky Resembles Twitter

Resembling its predecessor Twitter in many aspects, Bluesky offers a familiar yet refreshing take on social networking. While direct messaging is notably absent, Bluesky boasts enhanced customization options, promising a more tailored user experience. Users are excited to explore unique features on the platform as Bluesky opens doors to everyone.

The Bluesky Algorithm

Bluesky’s default linear timeline puts user posts front and center, but the platform also offers alternative algorithm-driven timelines. Additionally, Bluesky’s approach to moderation empowers users to experiment with various moderation schemes, fostering a community-driven ethos.

Interconnecting Social Networks

Looking ahead, Bluesky envisions a future where users have the freedom to migrate their social data seamlessly across platforms. This ambitious goal aligns with Bluesky’s mission to become the ultimate social account, offering users a one-stop destination for their networking needs.

However, achieving interoperability among social networks, known as federation, poses unique challenges. Bluesky has adopted the Authenticated Transfer Protocol, setting itself apart from platforms like Mastodon that utilize ActivityPub. Threads has also been trying to implement this interoperability using ActivityPub, so users can share their content with a wider audience. While this decision may introduce complexities, Bluesky remains committed to pioneering a new frontier in social networking.
