“Thank You For Coming” – Hit or Miss?

thank you for coming movie - the reelstars

“Thank You For Coming” ventures into the realm of sex comedies, attempting to navigate the complexities of love, sexuality, and societal expectations. Directed by Karan Boolani and featuring a stellar female cast, led by Bhumi Pednekar, the film explores the journey of Kanika Kapoor, a woman on a quest for both love and sexual fulfillment.

Despite the film’s potential to break barriers in a country where discussions around sex remain taboo, it falls short of revolutionary impact. The narrative, crafted by Radhika Anand and Prashasti Singh, stumbles in its attempt to weave feminist tropes, resulting in moments that feel preachy and, at times, cringe-worthy.

Kanika’s character, portrayed convincingly by Bhumi Pednekar, grapples with the complexities of her upbringing — born out of wedlock and raised by single mothers. The film delves into her journey, marked by societal judgments and a confused sense of love and sexuality. The storyline takes an unexpected turn when Kanika’s search for sexual pleasure transforms into a pursuit of marriage, introducing a muddled narrative theme.

The film introduces a diverse ensemble cast, with standout performances by Dolly Singh and Shibani Bedi, portraying Kanika’s supportive and lively friends. Pradhuman Singh as Jeevan Anand, Kanika’s potential partner, adds a comic touch to the narrative. Shehnaaz Gill’s character, while entertaining, seems somewhat disconnected from the overall plot.

“Thank You For Coming” manages to offer moments of humor, snazzy one-liners, and vibrant dance sequences. However, the conclusion feels forced, as if attempting to impose a moral lesson. The fusion of comedy and moralism creates a narrative dissonance throughout the film.

In the end, while “Thank You For Coming” is an entertaining watch with commendable performances, it misses the opportunity to make a profound impact. The mingling of comedy and moral lessons, while successfully executed in some films, feels forced here. It’s an enjoyable experience but falls short of being the ground-breaking endeavor it aspires to be. As far as we are concerned, it’s a hit and worth at least one movie night!
