Vikas Sangam Turned Into Vickypedia For Our Laughs
A journey about connecting people through relatable stories, smart satire and oceanic creativity.
In the ever-evolving world of content, trends change as quickly as time passes and only a few creators stand out delivering content that connects daily with audiences. A star just like you and me, who came from humble beginnings but earned a place in every household.
With viral hits like Naanu Nandini, Vikas paved a path for himself that blends humour, social relevance and content as raw as meat.
Meet Vikas Sangam: Engineer turned Entertainer
Vikas Sangam was a bright engineering graduate from a small town who never imagined his life would take a 360-degree drift. He was born and brought up in the historical town of Chitradurga. Vikas finished his B.E. in Information Science Engineering at the People’s Education Society Institute of Technology, affiliated with Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum.
Completely unaware of what the future held for him, after graduating in 2013, he joined an IT firm and worked the 9-to-6 like millions in Bengaluru.
But destiny had other plans. Barely interested in his IT job, Vikas followed his passion for creativity. In 2017, he enrolled in a liberal arts course, left the tech world and ventured into theatre, joining the “Indian Improv Tribe” to sharpen his artistic skills. This jump laid the foundation for his career as a content creator.
How Did Vickypedia Come To Life?
Vikas officially started creating content from May 29, 2021, for his YouTube channel, Vickypedia Kannada. His first video, Housemaid and Five Stages of Grief, got 13,295 views in the initial days. A modest start but an important one that kickstarted his journey to what he is today. Ignoring the numbers, Vikas remained consistent and developed his ideas, blending humour with social analysis.
Why the name “Vickypedia”? It was just one of this random things that sticks. One of his college friends tossed the name around randomly, and Vicky liked it. The name was attached to him, becoming a part of him and his online identity. Today, the name is known by millions of fans, eagerly waiting for his sharp and subtle takes on life, politics, films, and everything in between.
Naanu Nandini: The Viral Sensation
Fast forward to 2023, and Vikas hit the jackpot with Naanu Nandini, a parody of the 90s track Barbie Girl. His Kannada version featured relatable scenes of a Kannadiga’s life in Bengaluru, and audiences loved it; it pulled over 35 million views. The video showcases everyday struggles from bad PG food to butler English, in as hilarious and heartwarming a manner as possible.
The overall idea and inspiration for Naanu Nandini came when the Barbie movie was all over the news. Vikas and his team, Sachit Clare, Amit Chitte and Vivek Pattar, created and edited the song in just one day. This parody version exploded online, with over 15,000 Reels created on Instagram. Not just that, off social media, people danced and jumped all over during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations across Karnataka to the catchy track, strengthening Vikas’s presence in pop culture.
Vikas’s Theatre and Social Relevance
When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted every life possible in the world, Vikas focused only on social media. His early videos, like one on Dolo 651 tablets, became viral hits, showcasing his conceptualisation to bring everyday humour into content. Whether it’s parody character Muddu Kumar tackling online rummy addiction or political satire referencing the Emergency, Vikas ensures his work isn’t just entertaining but also thought-provoking.
Vikas also portrays many female characters, namely Ambika, Malathi, and Nandini, drawing flak but winning hearts for depth and humour. Initially, he was trolled, but people started appreciating the content once they understood its essence.
Beyond Content Creation
Vikas is a fitness mindset man, and a table tennis enthusiast. He captained his college team and coached many newcomers, spreading the love for the sport. Despite his social media fame, Vikas continues to direct small videos and never misses an opportunity to act in minor roles in Sandalwood films.
Lights Off, Un-Roll Camera!
Vikas lived in a PG accommodation in Bengaluru and was closely related to the struggles depicted in Naanu Nandini. “The food is bad, but I still eat it. Whatever I earn, I send it home,” putting up his modest lifestyle.
Personally, his fans hope to see him work in Kannada cinema, a sentiment of theirs and his, he prays. For now, he’s focused on content that makes people laugh, think and connect.
Does Content Creation Fill His Pockets?
Contrary to the existing popular belief, content creation isn’t always a guaranteed goldmine. Instagram doesn’t pay creators in India, but it helps them secure brand collaborations. His primary income comes from YouTube, live shows and at times coaching table tennis. Despite financial challenges, he continues creating content that relates to all of us.
Awards and Recognition
In 2022, Vikas’s efforts earned him the Best Social Media Entertainer Award from the Chandanavana Films Critics Academy. But as per Vikas, the real reward lies in the love and laughter he shares with his fans.
What’s next for this multi-talented creator?
While fans are eagerly waiting for his big-screen debut, Vikas remains committed to his plans as a storyteller. Through parodies, socially relevant videos, or satirical sketches, Vikas Sangam continues content creation with a unique blend of wit and wisdom.
