Jio World Plaza, touted as India’s most expensive luxury mall, threw open its doors to its well-heeled patrons on 1 November 2023.

Backed by billionaire businessman Mukesh Ambani, this extravagant mall has taken up residence in the prestigious Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai.

What to expect?

The mall’s prime location in the heart of Bandra Kurla Complex positions it as the upcoming go-to shopping destination for India’s elite. It caters to a discerning clientele by offering a wide range of services, including VIP concierge, wedding arrangements, porter services, and an extensive collection of luxury brands to fulfil every desire. Jio World Plaza is a vast 750,000 square feet expanse that proudly showcases 66 globally renowned brands. Among the elite brands making their grand entrance into this luxurious space are Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Burberry, Valentino, Dior, Balenciaga, Rolex, Bottega Veneta, Cartier, Bulgari, Jimmy Choo, and many more. Notably, Tiffany & Co, Versace, Bulgari, and Pottery Barn have set up their first-ever stores in India right within the confines of this mall.

Designed to impress

The design elements of the Plaza were inspired by the lotus flower, evident in its long, winding structures. The mall’s construction was the result of a partnership between a United States-based design firm and the dedicated team at Reliance.

For fashion aficionados, there’s more to look forward to. Dior’s first menswear store will make its debut at Jio World Plaza, while the mall hosts Louis Vuitton’s new flagship store, touted as India’s largest international luxury outlet. Adding a touch of diversity, the mall will feature a pop-up store for Ed-A-Mamma, a children’s clothing brand owned by popular Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt. Jio World Plaza also serves as a platform for several eminent fashion designers to showcase their creations. Names like Manish Malhotra, Rahul Mishra, Falguni and Shane, and Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla will display their designs, enriching the mall’s diverse and luxurious offerings.

The numbers say it all

Operating within the precincts of Jio World Plaza comes at a premium cost. As the property owner, Reliance Industries charges high rents to luxury brands. For instance, Louis Vuitton will be paying a substantial monthly rent of Rs 40.50 lakh for its space, while Dior’s 3,317 sq ft area will cost them a significant Rs 21.56 lakh per month. Additionally, luxury brands will also share a portion of their monthly revenues with Reliance, as reported by Reuters. These contributions range from 4% to 12% of their total revenues.

Glitterati, paparazzi and more

The grand inauguration of Jio World Plaza commenced with a captivating fashion show titled “The New Order Of Style.” Eight models graced the runway, showcasing the latest trends. The show featured designs from renowned fashion designers like Manish Malhotra, Falguni Shane Peacock, Abu Jani Mishra, Satya Paul, and Ri by Ritu Kumar. The event also witnessed celebrity appearances by stars like Janhvi Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, and Sara Ali Khan, representing their respective brands.

Mystery celeb and the currently omnipresent social media maven Orry made his presence felt here, linking arms with Nita Ambani, cosying up with Kareena and pouting at the paparazzi. His presence fanned several rumour fires about Orry’s origins, his designs and plans. So far, there’s nothing official on that front.

The opening of Jio World Plaza is a significant milestone in India’s luxury shopping landscape. It not only caters to the affluent with its exclusive offerings but also underscores the growing importance of the country in the global luxury market. With its impressive architectural design and a roster of high-end brands, Jio World Plaza sets a new standard for luxury retail in India.
