Who’s Missing At The MET This Year?
The MET carpet is officially closed for the year & we, like every fashion enthusiast who was
incessantly scrolling through Instagram for MET Carpet updates, are taking it all in. As Diet
Sabya would classify, some (a handful) looks ate & some (many) chop. Flashes worshipped the attendees who were dressed for the biggest night in fashion, trying their best to get the look on point with the theme “The Garden of Time”. Year after year, the growing representation of India at global annual benefits such as The MET Gala has made us desirous to see many more Indian celebrities. Isha Ambani, Natasha Poonawala, and Sudha Reddy are Indian socialites who have walked the MET carpet repeatedly. Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Deepika Padukone & Alia Bhatt are Indian celebrities who have made multiple appearances in the past & have vowed the fans. But who was missing at the MET this year?
PRIYANKA CHOPRA JONAS
Our very own desi girl missed the MET this year, she had earlier cited filming reasons & it
surely disappointed her fans globally.
When she first made her MET debut in a Ralph Lauren trench coat dress, she broke the
internet. Fans hailed her as the QUEEN and she soon became the MET MEME. It is a
fashion game; you win some & you lose some & she won big by marrying Nick Jonas her
MET partner.
For the second time, she was dressed in Ralph Lauren again & it vowed the fashion critics.
she looked absolutely ethereal.
When the MET theme is CAMP, you gotta have fun & she sure knows how to have fun. Her
look by Dior was a glorious blast of colours from her outfit to her makeup & she had a crown
on her head too. Well, she is a former MISS WORLD, so she’s used to crowns.
Her last MET appearance so far was scored well also, there was drama even though it was
a black-and-white ensemble. Her look was complete with swoon-worthy jewels (Why not,
she is the face of Bulgari globally).
DEEPIKA PADUKONE
With her statuesque persona & infectious smile, Deepika is always a treat to watch on the red carpet. No wonder she leads the pack when it comes to being the face of many global brands. She was a vision in white, dressed in Tommy Hilfiger for her MET debut. The diamond headpiece dazzled as much as her smile.
It was not very theme-appropriate for the year i.e. Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, but no one seemed to notice (except for Rihanna. Oops. Rihanna posted a picture of Deepika stating this is how you should not dress for the theme). Deepika was dressed by Prabal Gurung in a deep crimson hue for her second MET. The sculpted gown is meant for a supermodel & who better than DP to make this work, she made this look like it was no big deal. The third time’s a charm & charming she was. For her third appearance, Deepika wore a Zac Posen creation & it was nothing short of magical. The dreamy gown, the exaggerated hair, the makeup; it was all on point. She gave us Barbie vibes (harden than, dare we say, Margot Robbie gave in the entire Barbie press tour).
With the theme this year, we expected to see more Indian celebrities & more Indian designers showcasing India’s talent wrapped in sartorial heritage & techniques.
Nonetheless, we are happy to see Indian representation in style & are sure (or can hope) to see many more in the future.
