Could Your Favorite Hair Spray Pose Health Risks for Your Lungs?
In the pursuit of taming those unruly locks, many of us turn to hair sprays without a second thought. However, a recent revelation might make you reconsider that quick fix for a bad hair day. It turns out that the seemingly harmless sprays might be causing harm, especially when it comes to your nervous system, lungs, and liver.
Experts from Purdue University in the US have found that the chemicals released by common hair care products, often used in conjunction with heat styling techniques like curling and straightening, can be a silent health hazard. The study suggests that daily activities involving these products expose individuals to inhale up to 17mg of harmful chemicals each day, including the potentially hazardous decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5 siloxane).
But what’s the deal with D5 siloxane? Well, it’s a frequently used ingredient in various hair smoothening products and the emission of these chemicals can surge by up to 310% during the use of curling and straightening irons.
This revelation comes on the heels of previous studies highlighting the potential dangers of certain hair products, especially for pregnant women. The airborne release of chemicals during hair care routines has been linked to health risks such as obesity, diabetes, and heart diseases.
In a recent study involving 46 adults replicating their typical hair care routines, researchers found that a single at-home hair care session could lead to inhaling up to 17mg of these chemicals. So, the next time you reach for that trusty hair spray, you might want to consider the potential impact on your overall well-being. Beauty shouldn’t be pain.
