Goagr@m: Navigating Influencers, Susegad and Covid-19 in Goa

Bina Nayak’s latest novel, Goagr@m: Misadventures of an Influencer, dives into the world of social media influencers through the story of Madhur Chopra, aka Maddie. Fleeing a pandemic-stricken Delhi and a struggling business, Maddie seeks refuge and online fame in Goa. After finding success with her book Starfish Pickle which was made into a movie, Goagram is her next foray into fame, and we believe it is well-deserved.

The book offers more than just a glimpse into the glamorous (and often stressful) life of an influencer. Nayak, a graphic designer with a deep connection to Goa, uses Maddie’s journey to explore the impact of social media on Goan culture and the challenges faced by outsiders trying to navigate the state’s laid-back “susegad” way of life.

Influencer Culture Under the Microscope

Maddie’s initial struggles highlight the disconnect between influencer expectations and reality. Local vendors see her requests for free products as audacious, and the concept of influencer marketing is largely foreign. As Maddie interacts with the locals, she learns Konkani and Portuguese, fostering connections and a deeper understanding of the Goan identity.

The book doesn’t shy away from the dark side of influencer culture either. A chance encounter with a fading Bollywood star exposes the desperation for online validation. And while a leaked video throws Maddie into a nightmarish blackmail situation.

A Story of Transformation

Through her experiences, Maddie undergoes a personal transformation. However, the frenetic Delhiite softens under Goa’s influence, becoming more open, relaxed, and introspective. She grapples with loss, betrayal, and self-doubt, but her resilience keeps her pushing forward.

Bina Nayak’s Creative Process

The review also sheds light on Nayak’s creative process. An “obsessive writer,” she penned Goagram in just two months, fueled by the emotions surrounding the mass exodus of influencers from Goa during the pandemic. This passion is evident in the book’s vivid portrayal of Goa and its people.

To Read or Not?

If you’re looking for a lighthearted beach read, Goagr@m might have some moments that feel slow-paced. However, if you’re interested in a character-driven story that explores the complexities of influencer culture, self-discovery. And the transformative power of a new environment, then Goagr@m is definitely worth checking out.

Yet another Bengali girl in Bengaluru, Anusuya is an experienced content specialist with 12+ years of experience. Currently the content manager at OneNative Studio, she thrives on being hands-on in the creative process; from writing compelling articles & blogs to crafting engaging social media posts & website copy. When not meeting deadlines, she enjoys Pinterest-planning her next trips; to explore new cities and immerse herself in local cultures, especially local food. Choosing a degree in Tourism was a no-brainer, while the writing came naturally with years of her nose being buried in books.
