Exclusive: Why Bengaluru's Homegrown Artist Natauku Should Be On Your Indie Playlist

Who doesn’t love a little Indie music? And if you’ve been waiting to discover some new talent, meet Natasha Carroll AKA Natauku, a singer-songwriter/creator whose voice will make you swoon! Natauku’s star is undeniably on the rise. Her single “11 days” caught the eye of Rolling Stone India in 2023 and earned her a well-deserved feature. The track, a clever and relatable commentary on our tech-obsessed world, struck a particular chord in her hometown – India’s bustling IT capital. This versatile artist has also dipped her toes into the worlds of modelling and acting, collaborating with major brands like Puma. It’s clear that whether she’s behind a microphone or in front of a camera, Natasha knows how to captivate an audience.

Taking a break from strumming away at her Ukulele, Natauku told The Reelstars a little about herself:

Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from, and what got you into music?

I’m from Bangalore city. I grew up surrounded by music as my parents both were avid listeners of a wide variety of genres. My uncle even had a cassette shop on commercial street back in the 70s!

Can you describe your music style? What artists or genres have influenced your sound?

My music is a mixture of folk, psychedelic rock, jazz, grunge and punk. Major influences include: The Doors, Amy Winehouse, Sex Pistols, Pearl Jam.

How did you transition from creating music as Natauku to becoming a content creator? What inspired you to share your music journey online?

I started creating small videos of covers of my favourite songs, that slowly started getting a lot of views and recognition! I opened a new account to only post music and then I decided that music was something I wanted to do full time!

What platforms do you primarily use for your music content? How do you decide which platform is best for different types of content?

I use Insta, Youtube and of course my music is on all streaming platforms. Insta is good for short form content and YouTube is better for full songs!

What do you think sets your content apart from other music creators? How do you like to engage with your audience?

I’d say it’s my personality and musical influences that have shaped my sound that make people come back for more. I currently don’t have any particular approach to audience engagement but what I really enjoy is going live and creating a song on the spot with words that my viewers give me.

I also love acting and noticed that people like a cover that also has a bit of an acting performance included too! So I might do more of those.

Have you collaborated with other artists or creators? What did you learn from those experiences?

I have worked with some amazing musicians from Bangalore and they’ve recorded parts on my songs. I absolutely enjoy creating new sounds and love to listen to how other people interpret my music, they always give me new ideas and give me great clarity while working.

How do your live performances differ from your online content? Do you prefer one over the other?

I’d say I’m an old soul and prefer live performances more than live streaming.

What is your favourite part about performing live or on social media?

Performing live: the audience interaction and the liberating feeling of being in my element. It’s a very spiritual experience for me. Social media helps me to unwind and be creative, make mistakes and understand what people like to listen to.

With her unique blend of musical prowess and multi-faceted artistry, Natasha is poised to become your next indie obsession. Keep your eyes – and ears – open for more from this rising star!

Yet another Bengali girl in Bengaluru, Anusuya is an experienced content specialist with 12+ years of experience. Currently the content manager at OneNative Studio, she thrives on being hands-on in the creative process; from writing compelling articles & blogs to crafting engaging social media posts & website copy. When not meeting deadlines, she enjoys Pinterest-planning her next trips; to explore new cities and immerse herself in local cultures, especially local food. Choosing a degree in Tourism was a no-brainer, while the writing came naturally with years of her nose being buried in books.
