Kerala Creators Share Celebrations During Onam 2024

Onam is a major festival celebrated with immense joy and enthusiasm in the Indian state of Kerala and among Malayali communities worldwide. It commemorates the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali and marks the harvest season, highlighting Kerala’s rich culture and traditions. The festival spans ten days, each holding its own unique significance, culminating in a grand celebration of togetherness and prosperity.

One of the most distinctive elements of Onam is the creation of Pookalam—vibrant floral designs that adorn the entrances of homes. These intricate patterns made with fresh flowers symbolize prosperity and are a visual delight. Another highlight of the festival is the grand vegetarian feast known as Onam Sadya, served on a banana leaf. This feast consists of an array of dishes—often numbering 26 or more—including rice, sambar, avial, thoran, and the beloved payasam. The Sadya is enjoyed with family and friends, embodying the spirit of sharing and community.

Traditional attire plays a significant role in Onam celebrations. Women typically wear Kasavu sarees, which are white or cream with a gold border, symbolizing elegance and grace. Men, on the other hand, don Mundu, a garment of similar design. Together, these traditional outfits add to the festival’s visual splendor.

Creators and influencers have embraced Onam by sharing their festive moments with their audiences on platforms like Instagram. By showcasing their Onam celebrations, they not only honor their cultural roots but also spread joy and educate others about this vibrant festival. Here are some examples of how Mallu creators celebrated Onam this year:

Jinsha Basheer, a former software engineer from Alappuzha turned content creator known for her love of biking, celebrated a beautiful Onam at home. She decorated her house with flowers and enjoyed the festivities with her family, capturing the essence of Onam’s familial spirit.

Amrutha Saju, an actress, model, and creator, set major fashion goals with her styling video, helping her followers pick the perfect outfit for Onam. Her guidance on traditional wear inspired many to embrace the festival’s cultural elegance.

Ebbin Jose, a travel and food blogger, took his audience on a culinary journey to a place in Thripunithura that serves a delicious Onam Sadya. He gave a tour of the kitchen, showcasing the preparation process and the various dishes that make up this grand feast.

Ahaana Krishna shared a beautiful GRWM (Get Ready With Me) video for Onam, giving her followers a peek into her festive preparations. Her video radiated the excitement and joy of the festival.

Govind Padmasoorya, an actor and creator, celebrated Onam with his family, sharing heartwarming pictures from the festivities. The images captured the joy of the family dressed in traditional attire, spreading happiness and the spirit of Onam.

Nyla Usha, an actress, creator, and radio jockey from Trivandrum, Kerala, shared a vibrant dancing reel while looking stunning in a traditional suit. Her dance reflected the festive energy and cultural pride of Onam.

Saju TS, a video creator, celebrated Onam with his wife in style. The couple twinned their outfits, looking picture-perfect and adding a modern touch to traditional Onam celebrations.

Through these celebrations, creators not only showcase their personal connection to Onam but also bring the festival’s rich cultural heritage to a global audience.
