Kindness Goes Viral: Andhra Pradesh's Social Media Revolution

Social media connects us, sometimes making the real world feel smaller, and helps us share our thoughts with the click of a button. But if we have to face it, these platforms often turn into battlegrounds for negativity, trolling, and misinformation. The Andhra Pradesh government decided to pause and make us rethink how to use social media. Their latest campaign is everywhere for all the right reasons.

Taking inspiration from the wise old saying of the ‘Three Wise Monkeys, “See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil”, this initiative reminds users to use the internet with kindness and responsibility. Sounds simple, right? But it’s a much-needed message when online spaces are flooded with hate and harmful content.

Why this Campaign?

The government’s mission isn’t just another rulebook lecture. It’s a movement to build a digital culture of respect and empathy. Everyone from celebrities to government officials is joining hands to make this happen. Across the state, colourful hoardings of the ‘Three Wise Monkeys’ are popping up, gently making people pause, think and choose positivity before they post.

Indian former cricketer Mithali Raj also supported this thoughtful campaign. She spoke out about the damage caused by false information and toxic comments, especially for women.
In her words, “Social media should be a space for positivity, not for spreading hate or harming others.”

Popular actress Sree Leela, adored for her acting and dance, also participated “in Say NO to fake news and abusive behaviour.” Her instant video message struck a chord, reminding everyone that the internet should be a safe space for everyone, not an open ground for bullying and harassment.

What makes this campaign special?

I say because of its all-around approach. While the hoardings and celebrity support create awareness, the state’s cyber crime department is rolling up its sleeves to monitor and address harmful behaviour online more intensely. Those who spread negativity and falsehoods will now face extreme consequences.

Many public figures filed cyber crime complaints due to online abuse, and this campaign will push for a change. The government hopes to inspire everyday users to embrace respect and integrity online.

Soon, other states must initiate, too!

Andhra Pradesh is setting an example for the rest of India. This isn’t just about controlling, trolling, or stopping fake news; it’s about creating a digital space where everyone feels welcome, respected, and safe. Today, social media reflects who we are as a society.

Can’t we make kindness a trend?

Let’s take this as our cue to make the internet a place everyone can visit.
Kindness is a process, and we can all be part of it.
