Naman Mathur: A Gaming Idol Who Showed India How and Where to Play!
Read about Naman a.k.a Mortal, a legendary esports icon whose story perfectly shows one can have skill, fame and generosity.
Naman Mathur, who? He’s recognised as Mortal. Fans say it’s not just a name but a symbol of passion and fun in the Indian gaming community. Mortal was born on 22 May 1997 in Mumbai, India. He is a professional YouTuber, gamer, streamer and former esports athlete. He’s recognised and famous for gaming and streaming in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile (PUBG Mobile) and Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI).
And, dear fans, before you ask, yes, the wait is over! On 15 December 2024, Naman Mathur married Rutuja, leaving his followers to celebrate their gaming idol’s big day.
The Beginning of Mortal’s Epic Gaming Tale
Naman started creating for YouTube in 2016, he uploaded videos of himself playing Mini Militia. Back then, it was fun and casual and he had just begun. The actual things turned out in 2018 when he started playing PUBG Mobile. That’s when Mortal’s channel exploded and the gaming world noticed his skills, techniques and fun & humble personality.
In 2018, Mortal formed the iconic Team SouL with his trusted friends Yash ‘VipeR’ Soni, Harpreet ‘Ronak’ Singh, and Mohammad Owais Lakhani. Together, they became a force to be remembered within the esports scene.
In 2019, Mortal’s name echoed across India when Team S8UL won the PUBG Mobile India Series. After all this, why would someone stop? They claimed victory at the PUBG Mobile Club Open – Spring Split: India in New Delhi, which earned them a spot in the Global Finals in Berlin, Germany. Though they finished 12th globally, Mortal already made a reputation as one of India’s finest players on the global stage.
Shift from PUBG to BGMI
After PUBG Mobile was banned in India, many wondered if Mortal’s journey would slow down. But this is Mortal we’re talking about; as I said, he doesn’t stop. When BGMI was introduced, he started streaming in 2022 and led Team SouL to victory at the Battlegrounds Mobile India Pro Series.
Behind his fame, Mortal’s story always carried emotional weight. Losing his father at the age of 4, Naman was raised by his single mother alongside his elder brother in Mumbai. Despite many challenges, Mortal always was humble and grounded, it remained his strongest.
Why do fans love him? Not just for the gameplay but for his politeness. You’ll never catch him using any foul language, even when things get intense. His signature greeting, “Bhai” (brother), connects everyone: fans, random players, or friends.
And yes, if you’ve been in the PUBG Mobile days, you’ll know the era when players relied on “snaking” (hiding and crawling in the grass). But Mortal? He flipped the game. He taught the Indian community how to use TPP (third-person perspective) and execute perfect grenades. “TPP le raha hain udhar” (He’s taking TPP) became his iconic phrase. Mortal even turned the underrated DP-28 into a lethal sniper weapon. His friend Iconic once said: “Tune sabko DP chalana sikha diya” (You’ve taught everyone how to use the DP).
When Mortal won the Pico India Regional Finals, he donated INR 5 lakh to the Indian Army.
Building and Redefining Esports
He is the co-owner of S8UL, a gaming content creation and esports organisation that has become a hub for Indian gaming content creators and esports athletes. His achievements are unmatched. He won Esports’s Content Creator of the Year award in 2022, 2023, and now in 2024.
Speaking of awards, I think Mortal’s shelves must be overflowing by now. He was nominated twice for the Esports Personality of the Year in 2022 and 2023. He also bagged second place twice for Streamer of the Year in 2020 and 2021.
From being one of the Top 5 players in Asia’s PUBG Mobile Season 3 to becoming a role model for aspiring gamers, Mortal has done it all.
Mortal Maane Special
Mortal is beyond breaking barriers. He showed Indian gamers that you don’t need an emulator to dominate in PUBG games; just mobiles are enough. He encouraged young gamers to practice, create content and aim high. His humble nature, positive smile and genuine encouragement made him a beloved influencer.
Mortal continues to inspire millions of gamers across the country. As fans celebrate his recent marriage and his victories on and off the screen, one thing is sure: Naman Mathur is not just Mortal; he’s immortal in the hearts of his fans.
Fans say, “Bhai” taught us to game, to smile and to never give up, and for that, we’ll always cheer him on.
