Arguably the most famous influencer in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s weekend underwater adventure off the coast of Gujarat made waves not just for its daring, but for its  spiritual significance. On Sunday, February 24, PM Modi dived beneath the Arabian Sea waves to pay homage to the legendary submerged city of Dwarka. Accompanied by Indian Navy divers, PM Modi dived into the depths where the ancient city is believed to have thrived.

A Dive into History at Dwarka

As part of his two-day visit to Gujarat, PM Modi’s underwater expedition took him to the heart of history. Dwarka, steeped in mythology and ancient lore, holds a special place in Hindu spirituality as the legendary kingdom of Lord Krishna. Opting for traditional attire (saffron diving gear with a golden sash) with a diving helmet, PM Modi eschewed modern scuba gear, embodying reverence for the sacred site. Offering peacock feathers, symbolic of Lord Krishna, he paid homage to the city’s rich heritage.

Spiritual Sojourn

Descending into the ocean’s embrace, PM Modi engaged in prayer and meditation, surrounded by the remnants of a bygone era. In a moment of reflection upon resurfacing, he humbly remarked, “For me, it was more about faith than courage.” His underwater prayers captured the imagination of the nation, with images shared on social media platforms, including X and Instagram.

“To pray in the city of Dwarka, which is immersed in the waters, was a very divine experience. I felt connected to an ancient era of spiritual grandeur and timeless devotion. May Bhagwan Shri Krishna bless us all,” expressed PM Narendra Modi’s official social media handle on X.

“Dwarka Darshan under the waters… where the spiritual and the historical converge, where every moment was a divine melody echoing Bhagwan Shri Krishna’s eternal presence,” echoed Narendra Modi’s Instagram page on Sunday.

Bridging Past and Present

Prior to his aquatic excursion, PM Modi inaugurated the Sudarshan Setu, India’s longest cable-stayed bridge, symbolizing the union of tradition and modernity. Connecting Beyt Dwarka island to mainland Okha, the bridge holds immense significance for locals and pilgrims visiting the revered Dwarkadhish Temple. Adorned with verses from the Bhagavad Gita and images of Lord Krishna, the bridge stands as a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage.

Ancient Legacy of Dwarka

Dwarka’s history is intertwined with the tales of Lord Krishna, revered as the city’s divine guardian. From its mythical origins to its submersion beneath the waves, Dwarka embodies the enduring spirit of devotion. The Dwarkadhish Temple, dating back thousands of years, serves as a beacon of faith for millions worldwide, its resilience a testament to the enduring legacy of Hinduism.

Beneath the surface lies a tapestry of history, spirituality, and unwavering devotion. In the depths of the Arabian Sea, the echoes of ancient hymns still resonate, beckoning believers to connect with a timeless past and embrace a future steeped in reverence and faith.

Dwarka – Lakshadweep 2.0?

In the last week of December 2023, PM Modi on a visit to Lakshadweep, posted pictures and videos of him relaxing on the azure beaches of the islands, noting that Indian islands are far superior to foreign isles. This sparked a raging debate over tourists should eschew destinations like the Maldives and opt to promote Indian islands. Celebs hopped on to the bandwagon, pledging support to the cause of Indian tourism.

“For those who wish to embrace the adventurer in them, Lakshadweep has to be on your list. During my stay, I also tried snorkelling – what an exhilarating experience it was!”, he wrote on his social media handles, as he tried out snorkelling in the pure waters of the ocean.
