Lost in Chaos? Valar and Ram Share Secrets To The Traditional Life
Read about a traditional Indian family who is not just living a peaceful, plastic-free life but pushing boundaries to make an impact on us.
Most of us accepted the fast and modern living as the default way of life. Work 40-50 hours a week, maybe scrape together enough savings for a vacation every two years while braving the daily commute amidst noise, pollution, and the suffocating routine. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Haha! I can see you nodding in agreement while staring out the window of a crowded metro or an auto. I wish I had introduced Valar and Ram a little earlier and written their story, which might make you rethink what real, ideal, and Swadeshi living could mean.
The Traditional Life
Ramkumar and Valarmathy are a young couple from Thanipadi village in Tamil Nadu, India. Unlike you, me and most of us, they chose an entirely different dimensional life. One that feels like it’s been plucked straight out of a dream doesn’t get excited, not even our dream, but probably our grandparents. Together, they’ve shown the world what simplicity, tradition and sustainability are in all possible ways that can put most modern lifestyles to shame.
Valarmathy or Valar as she’s lovingly called, is a magician. Not just in the kitchen but anywhere in the world we see in their videos. She cooks authentic Indian dishes and international cuisines using ingredients grown on their own land. Everything from grinding spices the traditional way to crafting recipes passed down through generations, she ensures every meal is packed with both health and heritage.
Husband Ram is the backbone of their sustainable lifestyle. As a farmer, he cultivates fresh, organic vegetables and fruits on their agricultural land. But they don’t stop there, they are also building a food forest and planting trees to combat global warming. I won’t argue that they will save all of us; at least an effort is made physically beyond mere inspiring words.
And guess what? The Traditional Life YouTube channel shows us their peaceful living with daily activities and cooking. Their other channel, The Tiny Foods, shows us an entirely different world of miniature art and food that can entertain from a 10-year-old to a 100-year-old.
A Tiny World Making a Big Impact
Let’s read about The Tiny Foods. Again, this is no ordinary cooking channel. Valar and Ram started this channel after a Japanese miniature cooking TV show inspired them. Valar assembles tiny versions of South Indian dishes using doll-sized utensils, stoves, and props she made herself. From dosa and Pongal to Ambur biryani and even vegetable pizza, the creative juices here just flow in the farms.
Beyond food, the real magic is in the tiny world they create. Every video features a well-crafted miniature Tamil Nadu village. Complete with a house, a bullock cart and even a carnival setup. Most of these props are handmade by Valar. She sits for hours, dedicated and meticulous, to finalise the set.
Efforts of a cinema are put into their storytelling. A new recipe drops every Saturday and each time, it’s staged in a fresh, miniature setup. Personally, I feel their videos entertain a wide range of audiences from kids with joy to grandparents with nostalgia.
A Lifestyle Worth Watching and Following
Ram and Valar’s lifestyle is the peak of “waste not, want not.” They live a no-plastic, no-waste life, ensuring every resource is used thoughtfully. Even the food they prepare for their videos is shared with their family, including their dog, Maya, a Chippiparai breed native to Tamil Nadu.
Everything we see in their videos may look like an art piece, house, kitchen, or even farm, but nothing is just for show. Alongside vegetables and fruits, they produce their own flours and rear animals like cows, ducks, and swans, each treated like family. Every animal has a name, a personality and a purpose in their ecosystem.
In reality, this is a time when even villages are adopting urban lifestyles; Ram and Valar stand out as rare gems. Their life isn’t just a respect for the past; it is a map, proof, and blueprint for a sustainable future.
Let’s add a few more to their list of doings!
As if their dedication to a traditional, sustainable, carbon-free life wasn’t enough, their generosity left me in awe and can leave you too! The couple uses their YouTube revenue to support farmers and their children’s education. Their first paycheck from the channel was donated to a farmer’s family. Today, nearly 50% of their earnings go toward such causes, proving that their efforts are selfless.
Why Valar and Ram matter?
In their videos, they prepare traditional Indian recipes and the way the video flows till the end is beyond words. Watching them feels like a warm hug, reminding us of a time when life was slower, simpler and more meaningful.
So, here’s the big question: why aren’t we living like this? Why do we wait for retirement to dream of a peaceful, meaningful life?
Not everyone can move to a village and grow their own food. But we can take small steps, reducing waste, supporting local produce or simply appreciating the beauty of a meal cooked with devotion and tradition.
Think if this is worth reflecting on!
Both Valar and Ram’s lives aren’t just another YouTuber story, they are different from many others on the norm, it’s a challenge of life for all of us. This lifestyle just forces us to rethink the paths we choose, asking whether we’re genuinely living happily or barely existing.
So, the next time you feel trapped in the crowded world, just visit The Traditional Life or The Tiny Foods. Watch Valar cook a miniature biryani or craft a doll-sized pani puri stand. Let their life inspire yours.
After all, if a young couple in a small Tamil Nadu village can live sustainably, creatively and generously, what’s stopping the rest of us?
