Influencer Sharanya Iyer Claims She Spent INR 50 Lakh On Travel in 2024, Netizens Criticize

Popular travel influencer Sharanya Iyer surprised her followers by revealing she spent more than Rs 50 lakh in 2024. In a viral Instagram video, she opened up about how she stopped being obsessed with saving money and instead chose to invest in experiences.

Iyer, who has over 500,000 Instagram followers, shared a detailed breakdown of her spending.

She shared that she traveled to six different countries, including multiple trips to Iceland and adventures in Greenland. Her biggest travel expense was an Rs 8 lakh family trip to South Africa with her parents.

The travel costs included:

  • Rs 1 lakh for exploring Laos and Thailand
  • Rs 1.5 lakh in Madeira
  • Rs 3 lakh discovering Greenland
  • Rs 2.5 lakh for three separate trips to Iceland
  • Rs 5 lakh on flights to various destinations

Besides travel, Iyer made some big purchases at home. She bought a new Hyundai car for Rs 22 lakh and spent Rs 5 lakh on medical expenses. She managed to keep some trips budget-friendly, like her European summer vacation which cost only Rs 60,000 thanks to a lucky Rs 40,000 casino win.

“I used to be obsessed with saving money and rarely spent on big things,” Iyer shared on Instagram. “But 2024 changed that, thanks to advice from my dad and friends. Learning to spend wisely instead of just saving has brought me so much joy.”

Her video quickly went viral, getting over 1.3 million views. While some viewers wondered about her income sources and questioned such high spending, others supported her choice to prioritize experiences over savings. Iyer noted that these expenses didn’t even include daily costs like food and shopping, which she plans to reduce in 2025.

When followers asked how she managed three Iceland trips for just Rs 2.5 lakh, she explained that some parts were sponsored and she hadn’t included all flight costs in that figure.

“Not everyone needs to agree with my choices,” Iyer added, “but this change brought me happiness and security during what was otherwise a tough year.”

The revelation has sparked intense discussion across social media platforms, with reactions ranging from amazement to skepticism. While some followers questioned the sustainability of such spending patterns, others praised her transparency and embracement of experiential living. Notably, Iyer acknowledged that her calculations excluded routine expenses like dining and shopping, hinting at even higher total expenditures.
Sharanya Iyer’s recent post has sparked discussions about finding the right balance between saving for the future and living in the present, especially among young professionals and content creators.
