“Rajasthan Has Seven Names!”
Kavya Karnatac’s exploration of Rajasthan goes beyond its diverse geography. Furthermore, she delves into the fascinating history of the state’s name, revealing that Rajasthan wasn’t always called Rajasthan! This land of vibrant culture boasts a rich past reflected in its seven historical names.
Prior to 1947, the region we know as Rajasthan was called Rajputana, signifying the dominance of Rajput kingdoms. However, Rajputana was fragmented, and it took a remarkable 8.5 years to unify the region into the state we know today. In a recent post, she shared some in-depth information on these stages of unification that we found quite interesting.
Here’s how the unification of Rajasthan unfolded in seven stages:
- Matsya Union (1948): The first step saw Alwar, Bharatpur, Dholpur, and Karauli joining forces to form the Matsya Union.
- Rajasthan Union (1948): Nine princely states and two smaller chiefdoms came together to create the Rajasthan Union.
- United States of Rajasthan (1948): Udaipur’s accession marked the formation of the United States of Rajasthan.
- Greater Rajasthan (1949): Bikaner, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, and Jodhpur joined the growing union, creating Greater Rajasthan.
- United States of Greater Rajasthan (1949): Greater Rajasthan separated from the Matsya Union, becoming the United States of Greater Rajasthan.
- United Rajasthan (1949): Sirohi’s merger led to the formation of United Rajasthan.
- Present-Day Rajasthan (1956): The final chapter saw Ajmer, Abu Road Tehsil, and the Sunel-Tappa region integrate, officially forming the state of Rajasthan on November 1st, 1956.
Each name change reflects a significant step on the path to unification. Rajasthan’s journey from Rajputana to its present-day moniker is a testament to the region’s rich history. Besides, and the collaborative spirit that ultimately brought it together.
Kavya’s short, engaging videos answer the questions many of us have about India’s diverse states and regions. So, the next time you scroll through your social media feed, keep an eye out for @kk.create. Moreover, you might just discover that geography can be an exciting adventure, not just a classroom subject.
