5 YouTube Channels Blocked by the Indian Government
These channels promoted false news and engaged in activities that violated Indian laws related to digital media and information security.
Misinformation is a persistent issue, particularly on platforms like YouTube. Videos go viral and threaten public order, national security, and the digital ecosystem. To curb the spread of false information online, the Indian government tackled this challenge through strict regulations and direct intervention. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting oversees digital content regulation in the country. They identified YouTube channels following an investigation into the nature and reach of their content. It has repeatedly ordered the suspension of several such channels for disseminating misleading content.
Let’s look at a few such YouTube channels that had millions of subscribers but were found promoting false news. These channels engaged in activities that violated Indian digital media and information security laws and were hence banned.
SPN9 News
The government took decisive action by banning SPN9 News, a channel with over 4.8 million subscribers and 199 million views. This move came after investigations revealed that the channel had disseminated false and misleading information about high-ranking officials, including the President, prime minister, and several central ministers. The decision was made to maintain the integrity of public information and prevent the spread of misinformation. A move that could bring back public trust and national stability.
Sarkari Vlog
Sarkari Vlog has over 4.5 million subscribers and 100 million views. It was banned after authorities discovered that the channel was spreading false and misleading information about various government schemes. These inaccuracies had the potential to create confusion and misguide the public about important policies and initiatives. The government emphasized the need to uphold the credible information related to public welfare and ensure that citizens were well-informed.
Yahan Sach Dekho
The YouTube channel ‘Yahan Sach Dekho’ has over 3 million subscribers and over 100 million views. This was banned for spreading false information about the Election Commission and the Chief Justice of India.
Capital TV
With over 3.5 million subscribers, Capital TV was spreading false information about the prime minister, the government and orders concerning implementing the President’s rule in West Bengal.
KPS News
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting banned KPS News with 1 million subscribers. The sole reason was for disseminating false information about government programs, directives, and decisions. Some news include claims about cooking gas cylinders being available for INR 20 and petrol priced at INR 15.
Better Careful Than Regret
The Indian government’s ban on such YouTube channels is a growing trend to tackle the spread of harmful content online. Clearly, such measures safeguard society from the dangers of misinformation. It is equally important for us to note that such measures are fair and proportionate.
