Gen Z Influencers collaborating with UP Police as Digital Warriors

You might have read from Is All AI News Fake on Social Media? How the internet shapes opinions and spreads news in seconds. Now, let’s see how fake news and the battle against it are more crucial than ever. Uttar Pradesh Police is ahead of any other government in India. It has taken an innovative step by enrolling social media influencers and GenZ and Alpha youth as “digital warriors.” Isn’t it an exciting and practical initiative aimed at making the digital space safer for everyone?

Let’s break it down and understand “Digital Warriors.”

Fake news causes misunderstandings & panic and sometimes harms people and cybercrimes on social media can especially threaten personal security and financial safety. To address these issues, the UP Police launched the Digital Warriors initiative not now but back in 2018. They collaborated with volunteers from various professions like teachers, retired soldiers, doctors, journalists, etc. The initiative connected them and brought them to a platform like WhatsApp. Primarily, they reported crimes, debunked rumours and were responsible for spreading accurate information.

Fast forward to today

The police introduced this concept by adding as many volunteers as possible to various WhatsApp Community Groups and social media pages. The work by the UP police and all of us allowed around 2 lakh policemen to work alongside 10 lakh social media volunteers, making their communication and impact stronger than ever. However, as social media evolved beyond WhatsApp to platforms like Instagram, X, Facebook, and YouTube, the police realised the need to include a younger, tech-savvy generation.

How do social media influencers and college students step in?

Gen Z and Alpha youth who are familiar with digital trends and tools bring fresh perspectives and energy to this mission. They’re not only helping the police combat fake news but also raising awareness about cybercrime and promoting the dos and don’ts.

Director General of Police Prashant Kumar explained that these digital warriors will be trained to think critically, analyse information and verify facts before sharing them. By involving students, the police hope to create a ripple effect. These young warriors can educate their families and social circles and educate other youth in an amplifying way for better impact.

This initiative is not just about fighting crime but about changing perceptions. Students like Prabhat Chaturvedi and influencers like Shakti Singh are part of this campaign. When they see it as a contribution to our society and the nation’s security. Why not us?

With the help of workshops conducted in colleges & schools, the police will prepare these digital warriors with the knowledge and skills they need. Cybercrime experts, fact-checkers and trainers will share real-world insights and practical tips. Schools and universities are also instructed to establish Cyber Clubs, with teachers acting as nodal officers to guide students. Creative activities like poster-making, slogan-writing, and social media content creation will make learning engaging and impactful. This is an example of how people and the government must evolve as per the world with new and better initiatives and ideas.

What makes digital warriors even more significant?

Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 is approaching and the UP Police tested this concept in a pilot project and found it highly effective. The program is being implemented across the state, ensuring better preparedness to tackle fake news and cyber threats during such a massive event. This is not just limited to this; it expands to any corner where light needs to be shed.

Let me be honest, there are no benefits. The brand deals and other social media promotions may pay you but this initiative is voluntary and unpaid. This is a chance to offer our responsibility and patriotism for the sake of us. The volunteers’ duties include identifying fake news, raising awareness, and sharing factual information.

What does this mean for youth like you?

I say it’s a chance to use social media for the greater good. Beyond selfies and memes, platforms like Instagram and YouTube can become tools for change. By verifying information, and helping spread awareness, we all can create a better and safer digital world.

The internet has become an inseparable part of our lives. With initiatives like Digital Warriors, we can remind ourselves and our people of the power of unity and responsibility. It’s not just about the police doing their job; it’s also about us all coming together to ensure that digital safety is paramount.

What do you think? Shall we all be the warriors our digital world needs and unfailingly stay on the side of truth?
