Google Introduces ‘Follow’ Feature for Search Topics!

Google has just introduced a fresh feature that lets you ‘follow’ your favourite search topics for regular updates. Now, when you’re scrolling through search listings, keep an eye out for the ‘Follow’ option. This allows you to stay in the loop with ongoing updates on the latest related information.

While some find this handy for staying updated on continuous interests, skeptics argue that most users turn to Google with a specific search intent rather than looking for continuous updates on a particular topic. Additionally, this feature might pose competition for regular website offerings, impacting those that rely on newsletters or email sign-ups for updates.

The ‘Follow’ option is set to roll out in the Google app in English in the U.S. over the next few weeks. Alongside this, Google is expanding its “Perspectives” filter to desktop Search, presenting related social media and forum content within search results. Furthermore, Google is testing a “Notes” option, enabling users to share tips and advice about web content directly on Search.

The big question remains: Are these additions valuable enhancements to Search, or will they present challenges for websites? With Google referrals experiencing some turbulence this year, these updates are met with some skepticism about their potential impact. Only time will reveal if these features stand the test of time, especially with the emergence of generative AI search options.
