Indian Government Cracks Down on Deepfakes

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in India has just delivered a strong message to social media giants Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. The internet behemoths have been advised to act swiftly and remove deceptive deepfake videos generated by artificial intelligence(AI) within 24 hours.

The trigger for this advisory was a recent deepfake video featuring popular actor Rashmika Mandanna that went viral. The government is reminding these platforms of their responsibilities as online intermediaries, citing the relevant legal provisions.

So, how can YOU identify such deepfakes? Keep a lookout for:

  1. Unnatural eye movements or wave patterns
  2. Mismatches in colour and lighting
  3. Compare and contrast audio quality
  4. Strange body shape or movement
  5. Artificial facial movement
  6. Unnatural positioning of facial features
  7. Awkward posture or physique

The rise of deepfakes has raised concerns not just among officials but also celebrities, who are calling for more action against this deceptive tech. In response, Rashmika has stressed the broader implications of deepfakes, especially for women, who are already vulnerable to online harassment.
