In today’s digital age, misinformation has become a pervasive issue, impacting platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram. Meta, recognizing the importance of combating this problem, has launched an integrated safety campaign called ‘Know What’s Real’.

Identifying and Addressing Misinformation

Lasting for eight weeks, this campaign is designed to raise awareness among users about the significance of fighting misinformation. It focuses on educating users on how to identify and address misinformation effectively, particularly on platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram.

WhatsApp’s Safety Measures: Blocking, Reporting, Fact-Checking

Within WhatsApp, Meta highlights several in-built safety features such as block and report functions, along with forward labels. These tools empower users to spot misinformation and prevent its spread. Moreover, the campaign encourages users to verify suspicious information through fact-checking organizations accessible via WhatsApp Channels.

Instagram’s Collaboration Against Misinformation

On Instagram, Meta collaborates with a network of fact-checkers to verify information. If false content, like deepfakes, is detected, warning labels are applied to alert users of its inaccuracy. Additionally, the platform limits the reach of content labeled as ‘False’ by fact-checkers, minimizing its visibility.

Taking Action Against Misinformation

Shivnath Thukral, director of Public Policy India at Meta, has emphasized the company’s commitment to fighting misinformation. Meta has invested in industry-leading programs, including partnerships with independent fact-checkers and the establishment of a WhatsApp tipline to combat AI-generated misinformation.

Partnerships and Initiatives in India

Meta’s fact-checking program in India involves collaborations with 11 independent organizations proficient in 15 languages, enabling effective content review and verification. The company recently launched a dedicated fact-checking helpline on WhatsApp to address AI-generated misinformation, particularly deepfakes. Moreover, Meta supports the Misinformation Combat Alliance’s initiative to establish a self-regulatory organization for third-party fact-checkers.

By launching the ‘Know What’s Real’ campaign and implementing various initiatives and partnerships, Meta reaffirms its commitment to combating misinformation and promoting a safer digital environment for all users.
