MrBeast makes $250,000 on X, but isn’t too happy

They have been sparring for months now, and now MrBeast has revealed how much he earned from the ‘exclusive video’ he put on X last week, to check if he was going to make great revenues as promised by X’s promoter Elon Musk.

MrBeast takes on Elon Musk’s challenge

In a recent experiment, MrBeast, aka Jimmy Donaldson, took up Musk’s challenge and posted a video on X, explicitly aiming to test the platform’s ad revenue potential. Musk, excited about the endeavor, announced, “First MrBeast video posted directly on 𝕏!” A week later, Donaldson revealed the outcome: his video raked in approximately $260,000 from over 150 million views.

On the surface, these results seem promising, especially when compared to the same video’s performance on YouTube over four months, garnering 215 million views. Even in revenue comparison with a recent YouTube video shared by MrBeast himself—earning $167,000 with 99 million views over five days—the X performance appears competitive. However, Donaldson cautioned that the success comes with some caveats.

Is MrBeast happy with X?

Acknowledging the advantage of being MrBeast, he pointed out that the increased attention on his first X video resulted in higher ad rates. Advertisers specifically targeted his video, buying ads and contributing to the elevated revenue. Harley Finkelstein, president of Shopify, even boasted about being the first commerce brand to partner in the ad pre-roll for MrBeast’s X video.

Donaldson emphasized that this scenario might not be typical for other creators on X. The heightened attention and advertiser interest may not be replicated, leading to lower revenue per view for ordinary content.

In an aside, MrBeast has also playfully offered $25,000 for the first 10 followers who repost his video’s milestone and follow him.

What will MrBeast do next?

While Donaldson remained silent about his future plans on X, Musk is undoubtedly hoping for continued collaboration. Musk envisions transforming X into a robust creator platform to rival YouTube. If the platform fails to win over YouTube’s biggest star, convincing others to invest time and content on X may prove challenging. The experiment’s success hangs in the balance, shaping the narrative for X as it strives to establish itself in the competitive landscape of video content creation.
