Threads App Rethinks Tagging: Testing Hashtags Minus the “#”
In a move inspired by Twitter, Instagram’s Threads is testing hashtags without the iconic “#” symbol. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, announced the feature, allowing Threads users to tag topics and categorize posts by interest or theme. While users will use the “#” symbol to access tags, the actual display will show clickable blue links without the symbol.
The initial testing phase kicks off in Australia, with Meta planning to refine the experience based on user input before expanding to other countries. To utilize these new tags, Threads users can tap a dedicated “#” button or type the symbol followed by text. However, unlike Twitter, Threads will only allow one tag per post, potentially minimizing spam and showboating behaviour.
As debates swirl about the relevance of hashtags in today’s social networking landscape, Meta’s Threads is challenging conventions to meet evolving user needs. The reactions to this have been mixed, with tech veteran Chris Messina expressing discontent over the absence of the “#” symbol. The experimentation continues, leaving the future of hashtags in social media uncertain.
